What Is a Floss Threader?

However, it is a good idea to understand the reasons behind using a floss threader in case you or someone else in your family needs one down the road. Here is some information about floss threaders and why they are useful.

Floss Threader

Floss threaders look very much like a large plastic needle you might have used when you were younger to lace string cards or begin sewing practice. Instead of threading string for stitching, floss threaders allow you to thread strings of dental floss around braces or under bridges so that you can floss all of your gums.

Floss threaders allow you access to areas that are tied together or fused. Using a floss threader helps fight off both tooth decay and gum disease because flossers remove bacteria, plaque, and pieces of food that are trapped along the gumline. The cleaner your teeth are, the less opportunity the bad bacteria in your mouth have to grow and thrive.

When Do You Use Floss Threaders?

People with braces need floss threaders to floss their teeth over the brackets and wires that make up braces. It is impossible to work traditional floss underneath the wires of braces without a flosser. Keeping your braces clean and flossed is highly important because your teeth are not as clean with braces as they are without braces. This means you are more prone to cavities. The cleaner your teeth are, the more likely you will not have cavities or gum disease when you have your braces removed.

Floss threaders can also be used with bridges. Bridges are cemented or hooked into two of your natural teeth or implants to replace teeth you have missed. If your bridge is cemented in, you will have a space between the prosthetic bridge and your gums. You need to floss the space to remove food particles, plaque, and bacteria from under the bridge. Floss threaders allow you to reach that area to clean it.
